- 02/07/02 - first annual google programming contest - google.com, the world's top search engine, has just announced a programming contest. The gist of it is to come up with a useful and interesting twist to add to google's arsenal of search technology. You are given a 900,00 page sample of pages culled from the internet and a "ripper" program to parse the data, to which you are to (presumably) make alterations, upgrades, rewrites and improvements to demonstrate your brilliant idea. The winner gets fame, fortune (ten thousand US dollars), a trip to Google, and the potential to see your idea incorporated into the search engine.
